REEEP's Position on CDM: Make renewables additional

During the Copenhagen negotiations many parties highlighted the fact that the CDM to date is being perceived to have contributed very little sustainable development and as such, there is a desire to increase the requirements of the mechanism to enhance its standards in relation to sustainable development. At the same time, experience has demonstrated that in certain instances the current model directly interferes with the project’s activities in relation to social and environmental performance.

Report Released by the Electricity Governance Initiative of South Africa

The Electricity Governance Initiative (EGI) is a collaborative global initiative of civil society, policymakers, regulators and other electricity-sector actors to promote the open, transparent and accountable decision-making processes that are a necessary part of a socially and environmentally sustainable energy future. The EGI is led jointly by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Prayas Energy Group (India). The National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (India) was centrally involved in the development of the EGI Toolkit and implementation of the pilot phase of assessments in a number of South and South-East Asian countries. The EGI is a partnership for sustainable development registered with the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

REEEP eases financial crisis for RE and EE

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) has provided € 667,500 in seed funding for eight new finance projects to accelerate the clean energy market in the developing world. Piloting innovative finance methods is one of the Vienna-based NGO’s key priorities in its small-scale project funding, designed to have a wide ripple effect.

Working for Energy Scoping Document Released

The Department of Energy (‘DOE”) has approved a National Programme entitled, “Working for Energy” which has three major focus areas, namely the provision of sustainable energy solutions (supply side), demand side management interventions, and the creation of ‘new’, but sustainable job opportunities in South Africa.

Gobal Climate Network (GCN) South Africa Launch

The Gobal Climate Network (GCN) South Africa Launch took place on the 27th of January 2010 at IMBEWU's offices. The GCN consists of nine organisations in countries including the UK, US, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria, Australia, China, India, and SA, which aim to work together to help bridge the divide between international negotiations and national policies around climate change. The network allows all its members to draw on and share best practice, and brings together some of the world's brightest minds to figure out and pose a progressive solution to climate change.
